Skips offer a great solution for those who need to get rid of a lot of waste. You fill it up and once you’re done it’s collected and the waste is dealt with responsibly. You may be wondering what happens once your skip is collected, so we’re going to share a bit of behind the scenes information with you here.
Sorting Your Waste
Once the skip has travelled back to the waste management facility, the first job is to sort it. Our priority is to recycle as much as possible, so we might need to break down some items to separate the materials. Some of this can be done by hand, and some of it can be done using machines. Magnets are also used to extract metal pieces from the waste.
The reason for doing this is to reduce the amount of rubbish that gets sent to landfill. Landfills have very limited space available, and pose many issues. The gases released by landfill sites can be harmful, and the long time it takes for rubbish to decompose means that they will continue to take up a lot of space for some time, even while we’re reducing the amount that we send there.
Salvaging Usable Waste Items
As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Some of the things you’ve disposed of may not need to be processed. Items which are in useable condition may be salvaged from the waste to be cleaned up and sold on. Valuable items may be sent to auction or be put up for sale in the scrapyard or at a nearby reclamation store.
Incineration (WtE)
Waste which isn’t recyclable can still be put to good use. Rather than sending it to landfill, some general rubbish can be put in an incinerator. The heat which is produced is then used to generate energy. This saves valuable space by reducing the amount of rubbish at landfill, and generates energy which has less reliance on fossil fuels.
